Question: What impact does Garcinia cambogia have on liver damage when taken either by itself or in conjunction with green tea?
Design/Method: A Prospective Study was conducted under the title of US DILIN between 2004 and 2018. Cases of liver injury from G. cambogia either alone or in combination with green tea or Ashwagandha were identified. Control groups have consisted of patients with liver injury from herbal and dietary supplements (HDS) containing green tea without G. cambogia and patients from other HDS
Setting: The United States
Patient/Study community: 17 to 54 years old Patients with a liver injury that were consumed the drugs or herbal and dietary supplements (HDS) products in the 6-month period prior to the start of the study
Results: The results of the present study demonstrated that G. Cambogia-containing HDS products may be hepatotoxic. The clinical phenotype, which appears two weeks to 12 months after commencement, resembles acute hepatitis and is comparable to what is seen with acetaminophen overdose or viral hepatitis
Commentary:
This study adds to the body of evidence by showing an association with the HLA B*35:01 allele, a newly identified risk factor for liver damage brought on by plant-based dietary supplements. Green tea is frequently advertised alongside G. Cambogia; perhaps the two have additive or synergistic negative effects in genetically predisposed people |
